Most kids become exposed to letters and the alphabet around 2 years old.
At 3 years old, kids will recognize about half of their alphabet, and by age 4 they are starting to make connections to letters and their sounds.
2 years old - Exposure
3 years old - letter recognition for some letters
4 years old - know all letters and their order (beginning to learn sounds
The other day I was listening to one of my teacher podcasts all about reading and the literacy strategies, called " Triple R Teaching" by Anna Geiger. I clicked on the episode "What order should we teach the letters of the alphabet" because I thought it could apply to where I am at with my daughter currently. This sparked a lot of interest for me as a teacher becuase I thought..."have I been doing it all wrong"?
Here is what I learned.
As your child is learning the alphabet, teaching the letter and its sound at the same time has been what research is starting to tell us. While most of us have been teaching just the letter name first, and then the sound there has been lots of research going on to figure this out. Not only does reserach show that teaching our kids letter name, and sounds together but it is beneficial also start exposing kids to letter formation too.
