Why is it important?
Fine Motor Skills are crucial for the development of Pre-K children. Fine Motor skills involve the muscles in your hand, wrist, and fingers. Developing these skills will help children succeed in writing and manipulating objects. This is why we have children practice fine motor skills in many different ways. It can involve tracing with a pencil, cutting with scissors, kneading play dough, or making necklaces with beads.
How to teach it?
We are teaching our children these skills without knowing it on a daily basis. Just having children practice getting dressed, or eating with a fork is a form of fine motor skills practice. We do however, need to let children practice using writing tools with consistency. As much as our society is now technology dominant, the importance of writing is always going to be used in the real world too. With that said, we usually start children with a pencil and paper in preschool. There are so many ways to make tracing a fun game.
