Let me tell you that starting your Kindergartener and First Grader with non-fiction texts will benefit them in the long run.
Real World Connections
In my experience as an Elementary Teacher, I always see students mostly engaged with non-fiction books. Especially books about animals with real-life facts and photographs. When students read non-fiction texts they are learning about the world around them. These real-world facts build children's knowledge and experiences in the world around them.
Build Vocabulary
Exposing children to different topics teaches new vocabulary and language skills. In most non-fiction texts there are text features to support the vocabulary. Non-fiction texts help support with teaching text features such as a table of contents, or a glossary.
Teaches Information gathering-Skills
Gathering information is a very important life skill for children to learn. When reading non-fiction students are recalling facts and details. Students are asked many types of questions in the passages or books. This will lead to learning critical thinking skills.
