MINDFULNESS for the Classroom

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

I Couldn't believe it!

My least favorite time of the day used to be that "Post-lunch time crazy sugar high hour". I would pick up my class from recess and most of my students would still be on that sugar-rush lunch. It felt impossible to get my class's attention. I tried so many classroom management techniques including mindfulness.

One day I decided to see what happens with consistent mindfulness practice. I made sure to take 10 minutes every day to do our "zen-zone" time. I had the lights turned off, lamps on dim lighting, and calming music playing. I even put on my lava lamp for fun sometimes. I did this consistently for 2 months. We would do fun breathing exercises to help gain focus and relaxation. Using these different breathing techniques created a new classroom culture and sanity for all.

One of the days that we came back from recess I was held up talking to another teacher and my students were the ones leading our breathing exercises. I heard from one of the boys, "lets do hot cocoa breathing". I couldn't believe it! It was a proud teacher moment. I even had parents telling me how their kids were coming home and teaching them how to do deep breathing to get back to focus. With much practice and consistency, these techniques can do wonders.
