I just love teaching how-to-writing to K-2 students because you can always make it project-based and connect other subjects along with it. My top three how-to writing lessons I love teaching (other than how to make a peanut butter sandwich) are...
How to make applesauce (Cooking/ science/ STEM)
How to carve a Pumpkin (STEM/ Seasonal)
How to make hot chocolate (Cooking/ winter)
Here's why I love these three Seasonal topics.
you can make them all hands-on and demonstrate in your own classroom. If you haven't planned it with enough time to collect the supplies you can always show the students a video on youtube as well. I have tried both ways and they are both a success. The class has so much fun doing it and they even get to make a cookbook (for applesauce and hot chocolate) to take home and try again with their family.
You can teach expository writing and incorporate new vocabulary. It is great for all levels because it is DIFFERENTIATED! Thats right. These writing lessons each have differentiated planning pages and writing pages. It is especially great for your reluctant writers because each step is outlined in a simple format. sometimes writing pages can be too busy for our little eyes and we just need simple.
All my ELL students can use the word bank and word wall. I have even added an "extra word box" for other words your class comes up with that might not be on the picture page.
