As we know the first week of school is always crazy busy. You have so many things to check off your list other than just lesson planning. Of course the most important thing to focus on for that first week of school is Relationship building, Behavior and classroom Management. Oh yeah, and we have to get an idea of each students levels.
5 Essential Activities I do on the First Day of School
Name Tag decorating first thing! (this gives me an idea of who can write their name already and where my students are skill wise)
Practice routines and procedures with easy independent worksheets (I use coloring sheets or fun games to practice teaching students going from the rug to their desk)
Practice lining up and review WHOLE BODY LISTENING and chant out the list they need to remember using some sort of movement to help them remember.
Classroom maps/ classroom tour
For Math and writing I always do some kind of movement Jack Hartman song paired with a very independent easy worksheet that makes students feel successful. Remember we are just getting started. But teaching routines for the whole month will be something you have to keep chugging along with. By month two you will be surprised at how much the students have remembered. Also don't forget that Monday's are a mini review of expectations because believe it or not they will need to reset after the weekend.
