February First Grade Read Aloud

Updated: Feb 22, 2023

A powerful SEL lesson for Valentine's Day with a sprinkle of writing review.

Have you been struggling with big emotions in your classroom lately? It's that time of the year where you and your students are feeling it. I know. Believe me.

Every month I love to pick a book to teach a social emotional lesson. This year I stumbled upon a book called "In my Heart" By Jo Witek. I actually had bought this book for my daughter and we loved it. This read aloud is perfect for a mini lesson on feelings. First Grade students will love this read aloud along with a short writing piece to go with it.

There are two reasons you and you class will love this activity. Number one, it's differentiated! There are pictures, traceable vocabulary, and different writing prompts to respond to the story. Your students will feel successful which is the most important thing you can do for them. And number two, you can display these all month in your classroom or on your bulletin board. There is a writing page that goes with the craftivity. Students will feel proud of their work and even become aware of their peers emotions after displaying and sharing. Students will simply pick out two emotions they can connect with and those words will live inside their heart.
