How to Embed Reading with Science and Writing and Phonics.
While we love to read fairy tales and fictional stories to early elementary students, I have always found that my students LOVE reading anything non fiction. Topics they can relate to like a holiday, or family activity is a great way to start. I always find there can be a great learning opportunity in those animal reading passages, or holiday reading passages. I love to embed all the subject based off of what I am reading that week. For example, I will read about Apples for the week and tie it into science, writing and math. You can do so much with just one reading passage. I especially love when there are sight words we are hunting for. Students get so excited to see a word they are studying that week or a word we are reviewing in their reading passage. It's all about those text connections!
Last year I had a couple students in my class that did not celebrate holidays so I needed to find a reading topic that was still holiday theme but also not. So For Halloween instead of giving my students passages about that holiday I decided to create non-fiction passages related to animals like Bats and Owls. This gave me the opportunity to use these topics not only as a fun theme but I could then use them in my writing units. I even added First Grade sight words to the passages and included reading comprehension questions to help me get through reading groups.
