Engaging Lessons to Teach in February

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

February is packed with History and Holidays. Kick off your month by teaching students about Black History Month. Take them back in time with a virtual field trip and walk through a simple (K-1 friendly) slide show with writing prompts, videos, images, and vocabulary words, all aligned with writing standards.

Black History Month people I like to teach my students about

  • Martin Luther King Jr. (Important leader)

  • Rosa Parks (Woman in history)

  • Mae Jemison (women in science)

  • Louis Armstrong (artists)

  • Fredrick Douglass

  • George Washington Carver

These Google slides come as a PowerPoint version too. The lessons are all included with K-2 writing paper response sheets. I usually teach one historical figure a week and use that topic as our writing prompt for the week. I can make it an informative or Opinion writing prompt. The slides give lots of questions to ask your students for discussion. We always brainstorm together and then plan our writing as a whole class. After we cover major vocabulary and words for the planning page I have the students go back to their seats and start writing 1 -2 sentences for that day. My higher writers always go back and write their whole paragraph and then I meet with them and see how we can add detail or fix some sentences.

Valentine's Day Read Aloud

  • In My Heart (teaches about a spectrum of emotions)

  • Love Monster

  • Grumpy Monkey Valentines Day Gross out

  • Love Around the World (by Alli Brydon)
