Benchmark Advance First Grade Supplemental Reading Resources

Differentiating your Benchmark Advance Fluency

I created these differentiated fluency passages for my classroom last year. I felt that the Benchmark Advance reading and fluency jumped from 0 to 100. One minute students were learning short vowels and then the next week students were expected to be reading at a way higher level than they were at. Even my higher students struggled with reading and fluency. For this reason, I created these year-long Fluency passages.

How To Implement These in Your Reading Block

  • Use these in GUIDED READING GROUPS (1-2X a week)

  • At Home Review

  • Phonics Center

  1. Reading groups- Every week I introduce my reading groups to the reading passage they will keep in class with me, and later take home. I Make two copies, so students can get that review for homework too. This will be my students reading practice for the week. By Friday they will be able to read it to me in my reading group when I meet with them.

  2. At Home Review - I tell students to go home and practice reading and reviewing the sight words for that week...It works! parents also love that they can have the sound words and sight words all in one place for the week.

  3. Centers- I also switch it up and used these in centers. I usually have students read it 3x and do the three reads for independent reading. By the end of the week, they are experts and those sound words begin to stick.
